This year I completed a training program in Vancouver BC on Grief. It was a remarkable personal journey for me. This was not your conventional training program, where you sit in a classroom and listen to a lecture. In order to obtain the certificate in this process, you must first go through the process yourself. Dealing with a personal loss in my life, one that I could not seem to let go of was life changing.
Grief can feel like prison. Trapped in our emotions, with no way out, no escape. It comes in all kinds of different forms too. Losing someone we love after a lifetime together, ending of a relationship, loss of pet companion, or loss of some personal goal in life. What I learned in this program is that sitting around stuck in all this suffering is not necessary. You can actually do something about it, and take proactive steps to change your life. The key to that is the willingness to take the steps. It makes sense to me that a program that focuses on proactive tasks (assignments outside of the meeting) would make its trainers and teachers go through the process first. In other words, we have to roll up our sleeves and work on it. Experiencing this personally has allowed me to begin the process of moving on and living my life fully.
The Grief Recovery Method ® is a seven-step process that facilitates a better understanding of loss and grief. It does not allow us to create closure – a term that is not used in the training. Instead we are challenged to be “complete” in our loss, so that we can live and learn from it.
